Good News and an Adoption Giveaway

Want some good news?  On Dec. 30 we received the news from our lawyer that Esther Anahi is officially OUR baby girl!!  The adoption here in Paraguay is finalized!!!  We now have to wait for the month long legal holiday to finish so we can get her new birth certificate and start the Paraguayan ID process. We can't say THANK YOU enough for your prayers for this very long process.  PRAISE GOD from whom all blessings flow.  She was worth every minute!

Now the giveaway.  Interestingly, this week a blogger pressed the "next blog" button and stumbled upon our blog.  That person named Jane, is an artist in the UK.  She also happens to be an advocate for Reeces' Rainbow, orphan ministry.  The incredible connection is that she is doing a giveaway of an amazing piece of art for Ryan.  He's the little boy that God allowed us to be a very small part of his story.

Jane, is giving away her stunning, original piece of art called, "Becoming Butterflies" for Ryan's benefit.

The Art For Hearts Giveaway for Ryan.
Closing date: Feb 14th 2012

All you have to do to enter, is just donate $5 into Ryan's Reece's Rainbow adoption fund by
and you will be entered!
Then go HERE to tell Jane you donated.

Visit Ryan at Reece's Rainbow to find out more about this little four year old, abandoned in an adult mental institution because he has Noonan Sndrome, but is loved by so many. Wont you please help add to his adoption fund to enable this lovely family to save him?
And most importantly, please pray that Ryan would come home soon, and each orphan still longing for a home would find his/her forever family.

Oh, last thing...go here to watch ABC's recent coverage of a very heartwarming story of a orphan finding her home.

  3. Julie, you are NOT going to believe this! I have GOT to call you on the phone! Months ago I found out about Reece's rainbow from YOUR blog! I posted a link on MY Facebook. Remember the blog I wrote about Julie, Julie and Julie (you, me and my friend from Junior High who lives now in Ohio and is also an adopted Mom?) Well, God used my link on Facebook about Reece's Rainbow to confirm her and her husband's call to adopt.....they are Ryan's adoptive parents! The artist that just "happened" to click next blog and land on yours WAS NO ACCIDENT! God is doing something HUGE here! This just came full circle: I find out about Reece's rainbow on your blog...I put it on Facebook....Julie and Chris feel the call to adopt through Reece's rainbow...God leads them to Ryan..the British artist gets wind and donates her artwork...she clicks "next blog" and gets to your blog...you start to promote Ryan's adoption...which would never be happening if I hadn't seen the announcement for Reece's rainbow on your blog to start with! I am literally breathless! Julie, what dates will you be in Ohio this summer?! I will do everything humanly, and heavenly, possible to be there while you are there and arrange a reunion between Julie, Julie and Julie! They hope to have Ryan adopted by the end of this summer...maybe we can even meet him! This is amazing!

  4. That is so amazing! Congrats! I also just came to you blog by clicking "next blog" {it's intersting where you land sometimes}. I am very glad that you were able to adopt the little girl and give her another family! :D I cried at the video of that orphaned girl being adopted- very precious indeed! :D {and reading Fishers of Men's comment- what a blessing!}..

I am a birthmom to a wonderful boy who is now 2 1/2.. God called me 3months into my pregnancy to give him up for adoption- and He even sent the adoptive parents to my church {which is a whole blessed story}. I had him on his duedate and got to spend his 1st holiday, Easter {which was the day after he was born}, with him before the adoptive parents flew in. I am very blessed with how God worked things out for His glory {even when we were in the wrong}. I was able to see him this past summer for 2 1/2hrs- best 2 1/2hr of my vacation/business trip.

Anyways, just wanted to say Congratulations on the adoption! :D

Christmas in Paraguay!

If you're wondering what Paraguayans do at Christmastime, they have some great traditions , including the " noche buena " meal on Christmas Eve at midnight.  They eat lots chipa guasu (a type of corn casserole, stay tuned for a recipe), asado or grilled meat (some eat it cold), salads, especially fruit salad, watermelon and drink mucho terere . Families travel from all over the country, many even return from working in other countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Spain, to celebrate with loved ones. This is us at last year's Kurrle celebration in Asuncion. Festivities are anything but a silent night with fireworks, loud music and drinking cidra (hard cider).  Most Paraguayans do not decorate Christmas trees (we decorate ours in shorts!) or emphasize Santa Claus.  Instead, they put beautiful nativities " pesebres " in their yards and in store fronts.  Kind of novel to focus on Christ at Christmas, isn't it! To beat the heat, many Paraguayans g

Fighting Discouragement in the Busyness of Life

Hubby and I have made an agreement not to talk about sensitive issues after 10:00 p.m. It’s a rule in our household because when we were first married our late night talks would turn into fights and we would say hurtful things, because we were tired and our reasoning senses were shot. We eliminated almost all arguments with that simple rule. Exhaustion takes the best out of a person. Another new book on the market, talks about the high burnout rate among pastors. In reading reviews of the book, the author says that lack of sleep is one of the main causes of burnout. I’m reading this book that also deals with the correlation of sleep deprivation and discouragement. It’s a book for overactive people who are seeking to strengthen a love relationship with the Lord. Being in the ministry, I feel the demands of people’s needs constantly. Daily, we hear claps at the door to pray, to chauffeur people around, to do weddings, funerals, to lead Bible studies, to counsel just about any pro

Paraguayan Weddings

On Valentine’s Day, we had the joy of attending the wedding of Sandra and Anastacio, young leaders in the church. Sandra is my assistant with Children of Promise and Anastacio, apart from his carpentry job, has a popular youth-focused radio program every night at 8:00 on our station. We’ve been to quite a few weddings, and these are some of the uniquenesses of southern Paraguayan wedding celebrations from our North American culture: 1. Nothing is fancy. Emphasis is placed on the act of marriage and not on the decorations or food. 2. It is not an expectation that parents help pay for expenses. Most families just make it each month with regular expenses and cannot afford to pay for eleborate feasts. Most couples have to spend months saving for their own wedding. 3. Borrow as much as possible. Many times wedding dresses are borrowed 5-10 times, because few women can afford their own. Flowers, decorations, shoes and ties (Norb loans out his ties often...since he never wears them!
